The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the continuation of the Central Sector Scheme of Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) till the term of the 14th Finance Commission entailing an annual allocation of Rs. 3,950 crore and a total outlay of Rs. 11,850 crores over the next three years with an additional annual allocation of Rs. 5 crore per year for monitoring and for capacity building/training of the State/District officials imparted by the Ministry.
Launched in 1993-94, the MPLAD scheme has effectively created durable assets like drinking water, education, public health, sanitation and roads etc. for the entire country. The decision has been taken by the CCEA keeping in mind the number of tasks undertaken by the people associated with the scheme, which amounts to 18, 82, 180 and the benefits provided to the entire country by the successful completion of these tasks.
