National Conference on Welfare of Lab Animals

The Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) organized a National Conference based on the theme of Implementation of the three ‘R’s of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement when using animals for academic research and regulatory tests in India. The inaugural session was chaired by A K Jain, Additional Secretary in the MoEF&CC and Dr. G N Singh, Drug Controller General of India.

Deliberating upon exempting animals from testing wherever possible, eminent speakers like Dr. Subeer Majumdar, Director in the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Dr. K Muralidhar, Professor in the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Dr. Y K Gupta, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS and Dr. Alok Dhawan, Director, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, shared their perspectives on the matter during the one day long National Conference. Also present at the Conference were 200 participants belonging to various research establishments from all over the country and representatives from PFA and PETA India who positively encouraged the exchange of views between the stakeholders.
