With the new Congress Government in place in Punjab, hectic lobbying for the post of police chief has started in the State, Bureaucracy Today has learnt.
According to sources, there would be a major reshuffle in police postings in Punjab after March 18. Capt Amarinder Singh will take oath as Chief Minister on March 16.
Though the present Director General of Police, Suresh Arora, IPS (PB:82), will continue as of now, there are speculations that the new Congress Government might give the top job to Sanjeev Gupta, IPS (PB:82).
Sources said, Gupta, who is considered close to Capt Amarinder Singh, was sidelined by the previous regime and was posted as Adviser, Prison Reforms, a post considered to be less significant.
Another strong contender is Mohd Mustaffa, IPS (PB:85). He is presently posted as DGP, Punjab State Human Rights Commission. His wife Razia Sultana has won from Malerkotla on a Congress ticket and in all likelihood will be a Cabinet minister in the new Cabinet.
