The Supreme Court expressed concern over the deaths of 14,926 people in the last five years on the streets of the country due to pillars on the roads in the last five years. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur said that due to pillar, large number of deaths were "unacceptable" and were probably "more than the people killed by the border or by terrorists." The bench, including Justice Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta, said that the number of deaths caused by Pathol from 2013 to 2017 indicates that the concerned officers were maintaining the roads. The Bench sought a response from the Center on the report filed by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court Judge Justice KS Radhakrishnan. The Bench has posted the case for further hearing in January.
