Padma Awarded to ASEAN countries

Every year India gives away the honorary award of Padma Shri at the country’s Republic day celebrations. This year, the awards were extended to ten members of the ASEAN.

Malai Haji Abdullah Bin Malai Haji Othman of Brunei Darussalam was honoured with Padma Shri in the field of Social work. He is the founder of the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources in Brunei.  Hun Many of Cambodia was honoured with Padma Shri in the field of Public Affairs. Many is Cambodia's youngest Parliamentarian and the President of Union on Youth Federations of Cambodia. I Nyoman Nuarta of Indonesia was awarded with Padma Shri in the field of Art. Nuarta is an Indonesian sculptor known for his works like Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue. He is one of the pioneers of the New Art Movement in Indonesia. Bounlap Keokangna of Laos was honoured with Padma Shri. Keokangna is a conservationist who had a major role in the restoration of the Shiva Temple of Bhadreshwara at the Vat Phou World Heritage site in Laos. Datuk Ramli Bin Ibraham, a Malaysian classical Odissi dancer and trainer, who runs an Odissi production with the name of “Ganjam”, based on Tridhara, a combination of Tribal, Folk and Classical styles was awarded with Padma Shri in the field of Art. Dr. Thant Myint-U, a historian and author working for conservation of historic buildings in Yangon was awarded with Padma Shri in the field of public affairs. He served in the United Nations as former Advisor to the Myanmar President. Jose Ma Joey Concepcion III, CEO and President of the RFM Corp in Philippines, appointed as Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship PCE, was awarded with Padma Shri in the field of Trade and Industry. Tommy Koh, ambassador-at-large in the Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been awarded with Padma Shri in the field of Public Affairs. Somdet Phra Ariya Wongsa Khottayan, the 20th Patriarch of Thailand was awarded with Padma Shri. Last but not the least, Nguyen Tien Thien, Secretary General of National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Vice-Chairman of the Vietnam-India Friendship Association who brings large groups of Vietnamese Buddhist pilgrims to India to educate them about the historical and civilisational linkages between the two countries was also awarded with the Padma Shri.
