India Continuing to push for reform and expansion of the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) stated that the current UN governance structures are obsolete and therefore demand fundamental reforms for retaining legitimacy and effectiveness.

Yedla Umasankar, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, told a UN General Assembly committee that effective multilateralism and international rule of law require that the global governance structures should reflect contemporary realities.

“The old structures were designed for a bygone era serving the interests of a handful of nations and therefore do not represent the changed ground realities of the present times” he further added.

Notably, India along with Brazil, Germany and Japan have been pushing for the expansion of the UN Security Council and restructuring of institutions of international governance like World Bank, IMF to give a greater share in representation to these emerging markets.
