As many as 3,61,060 foreign tourists arrived in India in 2016 for medical purpose as against 2,33,918 medical tourism visitors  in 2015 and 1,84,298 in 2014, according to a Tourism Ministry data.

Medical and wellness tourism are mostly driven by the private sector and cost of such services are determined by the market forces.

Ministry of Tourism has released guidelines for promotion of medical and wellness tourism as niche tourism product. As per the guidelines, Ministry of Tourism offers financial support to accredited medical and wellness tourism service providers, chambers of commerce and other organisations as marketing development assistance, for publicity, organising workshop, events and seminars and for organising wellness and medical tourism promotion shows.
