President Pranab Mukherjee has extended his greetings and felicitations to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the eve of their new year, Nouroz.
In a message to Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran, Mukherjee said, “On the occasion of Nouroz, I extend warm greetings and best wishes to you, the Government and the friendly people of Islamic Republic of Iran. The close friendship and cooperation between India and Iran are built on historical, civilisational and cultural ties spanning more than two millennia. In modern times bilateral relations between the two countries are defined by close and multifaceted cooperation in diverse fields."
Interestingly, March 21 was proclaimed as International Nowruz Day by the United Nations General Assembly, in 2010, at the initiative of several countries that share this holiday Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, India, Iran Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.
Nowruz is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It is also known as the Persian New Year.
