Vajpayee’s life a guide to politicos
Atal Bihari Vajpayee is one of Indias most influential and charismatic politicians, and the most significant one outside of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. Vajpayees successful steering of an unwieldy coalition, which changed the complexion of Indian politics, is considered his biggest achievement. He brought a significant improvement in Indo-Pak relations and his landmark efforts for peace with Pakistan had few opponents. The reform programmes, like the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan and the PMGSY, initiated during his Prime Ministership brought smiles to the faces of the masses. India became a declared nuclear power and an emerging power in information technology, business process outsourcing and biotechnology during his regime. Vajpayee, whose name continues to be invoked by BJP campaigners, is an inspiration to new generation politicians. In today’s political arena, where coalition dharma is the rule, his life can guide politicos on how not to ruffle someones feathers and still reach the top. Bureaucracy Today through its Cover Story pays tribute to the living legend on his birth anniversary on December 25, 2013.
Also in this issue, we have an exclusive investigative report on the mismanagement of funds by Delhi University during the Commonwealth Games. Confidential documents in possession of Bureaucracy Today raise eyebrows about whether the CAG adopted a partisan approach to the irregularities allegedly committed by DU officials in the CWG. The entire sequence of events, as unearthed by BT, points fingers at the credibility of the anti-graft watchdog and the functioning of DU. This is the first report in the DU graft series. In the second part we will reveal more shocking incidents of corruption by DU during the Commonwealth Games.
