The legacy returns
Never say never in politics. Despite strongly denying that she will not enter politics to compete with brother Rahul. Congress party President Sonia Gandhi’s daughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is reportedly all set to fight the Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli in 2014. Our Cover Story this month is about Priyanka’s imminent entry into active politics. Bureaucracy Today learnt from credible sources that Sonia Gandhi has finally given in to the pressure and gave her consent in favour of Priyanka to fight Lok Sabha elections 2014. The active presence of the siblings in politics may change the Congress’s fortunes and may alter the political scene. While Rahul Gandhi represents the immediate future, Congress workers identify the self-effacing Priyanka as a symbol of power in the years to come.
Priyanka has always been by her mother’s and brother’s side over the years. Remember when Rahul addressed the media after his party’s debacle in the UP Assembly poll and accepted the responsibility for the Congress loss at the hustings, Priyanka was seen waiting patiently for her brother to finish talking to journalists. After Rahul had done it she put her arms around him and led him away inside the house— it was almost as if she was trying to protect Rahul from harsh realities of the world and the bitter truth of electoral politics.
It will be interesting to see how the siblings work together and carry forward their family legacy to bring a positive change in the nation in time to come.
Also in this BT issue there is a report about a Wikileaks cable released on the visit of the then US Ambassador to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd in 2010. The cable shows a poor image of India’s position related to its indigenous defence production in the eyes of the world. The American Ambassador was taken to every possible sensitive place at the HAL production unit without realizing its repercussions and implications. If you believe that India is going to become a superpower in the region, then the contents of the Wikileaks cable will definitely agitate and disturb you.
