#TweeSurfing – a national initiative to promote Cyber Safety launched
Centre for Social Researchand Twitter India launched their online safety initiative, TweeSurfingin Kolkata afterMumbai, Delhi & Bangalore
New Delhi & Kolkata, 24thSeptember 2018: Centre for Social Research, an organisation working towards a gender just society in India, in collaboration withthe global social media platform, Twitterhave launched theircybersafety workshopsnamed#TweeSurfing in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore. The Kolkata chapter of TweeSurfingwas launched last Saturday (Sep 22), which was in continuation to its previous programs in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
Some of the prominent speakers at the launch included Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Director Centre for Social Research, New Delhi, Mr. Harish Iyyer, LGBTQI activist from Mumbai, Ms. Manasi Salvi, TV actress from Mumbai and Mr. Rahul Rajkhowa, singer from Guwahati.
“TweeSurfing is our flagship initiative to battle hate speech in the online space. I thank Twitter India for their constant support. The goal of this programme is to create a culture of positive gender sensitive and safe environment on Twitter, by promoting use of counter speech, sensitive campaigns and listing user-driven best practices. We have connected with more than 90 influencers who have shared their twitter stories with us, which are directly shared with the millenials and anyone who wishes to use #TwitterForGood,” said Dr Ranjana Kumari, Director, Centre for Social Research.
Under the initiative,TweeSurfing connected with more than 90 influencers from diverse fields and interviewed them on their twitter journey and their understanding of the safety mechanisms for various issues on social media. Among the influencers were Anupam Kher, Shashi Tharoor, Shreyas Talpade, Priyanka Chaturvedi, RJ Malishka, Khurafati Nitin, Sorabh Pant, Rohan Joshi and many more. The TweeSurfing workshops provide users a platform to discuss their views through active participation. The goal of this programme is to create a culture of positive gender sensitive and safe environment on Twitter, by promoting use of counter speech, sensitive campaigns and listing user-driven best practices. It also aims to tackle issues relating to online abuse and harassment directly, by making Twitter Rules and Tools, and the work being done by @TwitterSafety, accessible to all users.
TweeSurfing workshops have also been conducted in different parts of the country, from far-flung rural areas like Erode to bigger cities like Guwahati, as well as in small towns in Jammu and Kashmir. Social media users have benefitted through this program immensely and have contributed their views as video tweets as well.
A Twitter Literacy program designed to spread knowledge on how to use the platform for better purposes, TweeSurfing intends to leverage the cyber conversation on how the users can have a positive online presence by maximizing the use of twitter for social good.
